Alby-Sur-Chéran is a commune near Annecy in Haute-Savoie. It is located in the Albanais, on the banks of the Chéran. It has 2,646 inhabitants.
History and Heritage
The first origins date back to the Middle Ages. The town was then divided into two parishes, Saint Donat and Saint Maurice. A lookout had to be passed over the Chéran to link Annecy to Chambéry. Seven castles protected the town. During the 19th century, more than 300 shoemakers out of 1,200 inhabitants settled in the town. The construction of a bridge in 1720, then in 1728, marked the beginning of the prosperity of Alby-Sur-Chéran. In 1888, thanks to a wooden dam, the town was one of the first in France to have electric lighting.
To appreciate the heritage of the commune, you can visit the following sites:
- The triangular-shapedPlace du Trophée in the old town, dedicated to shoemakers.
- The Chapel of Saint Maurice, which was probably originally part of the castle of Pont Vieux.
- The contemporary church of Notre Dame du Plaimpalais, according to the plans of the architect Maurice Novarina.
- The botanical path of the Crétêts, which links the chapel of Saint Maurice to the church of Plaimpalais.
