The Parmelan

The Parmelan is an impressive limestone plateau that rises to an altitude of 1,832 meters. It is part of the Bornes massif, located behind the Mont Veyrier. The large cliffs that surround this mountain are a well-known feature of the Annecy landscape.

An emblematic mountain of Annecy

It is a beautiful hike to walk on the limestone plateau of Parmelan. The ground is made up of cracks, chasms, and faults known as lapiaz. Thus, in foggy weather, this hike is to be avoided. These geological curiosities are caused by the runoff of water on the rock.

Access to the mountain is impossible in case of snow cover, as the roads are closed.

At the summit of Parmelan, there is a refuge open from mid-May to mid-September, which belongs to the French Alpine Club. Large in size, it allows for a break at the end of a hike, to refresh, eat Nepalese food (by reservation), and even spend the night.

How to access the summit of Parmelan?

  • The easiest way is to park at the chalet de l’Anglettaz (pronounced โ€œde l’Angletteโ€) starting from the village of Aviernoz (pronounced โ€œd’Aviernozโ€). The path is a very steep and unpaved mountain road.
  • The roads of the Grand et Petit Montoir allow access to the plateau only during the summer because the snow remnants (nรฉvรฉs) can make the path slippery. Access is from Villaz by following the forest road of Parmelan.

Lapiaz at the summit of ParmelanTo access the plateau and enjoy this beautiful outing with family, the departure is from Villaz at the end of the road. The elevation gain is 675 meters. The vegetation consists of firs and pines. The best period is from mid-June to October depending on snow conditions. In case of rain, it is advisable to postpone the ascent as the ground can be very slippery on the slopes. The duration of the excursion is 2 hours going and 1 hour 30 minutes for the return by the same path.

The loop on the plateau

The Pertuis path to Parmelan Haute-SavoieIf you choose to do the loop on the plateau, it takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes. The Grand Montoir includes a difficult section with cables, which should be avoided by children and those prone to vertigo. The path of the Petit Montoir is recommended. The lapiaz on the plateau can hide holes, so caution is advised, especially with children. The trail includes many stones, and mountain shoes are recommended. In summer, it is better to start early to avoid thunderstorms.

We recommend the following hikes: the large loop on the plateau that crosses the Cave of Hell and the ice caves (large cavity). The Pertuis path that follows the ridge of Parmelan is also a beautiful route.

At the summit, the panoramic view is splendid over la Tournette and further on the Massif des Bauges.
