Saint-Jorioz

Saint Jorioz is a town located a few kilometres south of Annecy on the western shore of Lake Annecy towards the towns of Faverges, Ugine, Albertville and the great valleys of Savoie. The commune covers 2112 hectares at an altitude of between 440 and 1650 metres and is populated by approximately 5700 inhabitants known as Saint-Joriens and Saint-Joriennes.

History and heritage

The first settlements in Saint Jorioz date from the Neolithic period. Piles of lake dwellings attest to this. The Roman period was characterised by the construction of an imperial road linking Geneva to the Petit-Saint-Bernard pass, passing through Macellum (formerly Saint Jorioz). In the Middle Ages, Blessed Jore founded a priory near the lake. It is his name “Jore” which will give “Saint-Jore” then Saint-Jorioz.

The country museum, whose entrance is free, presents scenes and objects of daily life in the past: agricultural tools, firemen’s equipment, reconstitution of a classroom and a bedroom.

Address: 47 route de Tavan. Open only from 4 July to 17 September.

Épagny’s communal oven was built on 9 February 1879 by the inhabitants. It was heated every two weeks and everyone could come and bake their bread. Nowadays, the bread festival is organised several times a year, where you can taste the products for free: flamiches, breads and buy some.

Walks

We recommend the “sentier des Roselières” (reed bed path) starting from the Esplanade de l’Espérance, this walk will take you to the port. Many birds: swans, green collars, coots, mackerels nest in this natural habitat.

The Marais de l’Enfer is a site of community interest classified Natura 2000. Its surface area of 23 hectares gives it a major ecological role for the fauna and flora of Lake Annecy. It constitutes a natural boundary with the commune of Sévrier that cannot be built on.

The loop of the Laudon follows this river up to Saint-Eustache with beautiful panoramas on the lake.

The Crêt d’Appêt path allows you to take a pleasant stroll to Les Charmettes.
