Connecting to fibre optics in Annecy

Since 2012, Annecy has been one of the first cities in France to deploy optical fibre. This technology allows very high speed internet access. We offer you an update on the areas connected to optical fibre in Annecy and its agglomeration.

The north of Annecy is the first to be connected to fibre optics

Fibre optique AnnecySince autumn 2012, the operator Orange has been responsible for installing the fibre optic network in Annecy. SFR has signed an agreement with Orange to also invest in the deployment of fibre. As early as 2014, SFR offered this technology to its customers in the north of the city up to the Basilique de la Visitation. At that time, Bouygues Télécom offered a service in the south and centre of the city, but not all districts were connected. Free did not yet have an offer in Annecy

Orange will also deploy the Fiber To The Home (FTTH) network in other towns in Haute-Savoie: Cluses, Thonon-les-Bains and Annemasse.

During this first period, the north of the city is very well connected. It will be necessary to wait until 2017 for the south, and therefore almost the whole of Annecy, to be accessible to very high speed ( VHS ). It is interesting to remember that the construction of a new network such as fibre only happens once a century, as was the case for the telephone. It takes about ten years for an agglomeration like Annecy to be 100% covered.

The Annecy conurbation has fibre

In 2021, the following municipalities will be almost completely connected to the fibre: Annecy, Annecy-le-Vieux, Cran-Gevrier and Seynod. For other neighbouring communes, the connection is partial, but it is ongoing: Meythet, Poisy, Chavanod, Argonay, Saint-Martin-Bellevue, Epagny-Metz-Tessy, Pringy and Quintal.

77% of the homes in the new commune of Annecy can be connected to the fibre, but there are still some neighbourhoods waiting to be connected, such as Clarines in Annecy-le-Vieux and the Vernay neighbourhood in Cran-Gevrier. The communes of Argonay, Chavanod and Quintal are only partially connected. Montagny-les-Lanches is not yet connected.

All the operators: Orange, SFR, Bouygues Télécom and Free offer a subscription to the optical fibre network in Annecy.

Fibre is being deployed on the outskirts of the Annecy agglomeration

SYANE (Syndicat des énergies et de l’aménagement numérique de la Haute-Savoie) is a public body financed by local authorities such as the department, the agglomerations and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is investing nearly €300 million to deploy fibre optics to 90% of businesses and 300,000 homes in 246 communes in Haute-Savoie.

These are mainly municipalities on the outskirts of urban areas that did not have fibre optic equipment from the usual private operators, such as Sévrier, Villaz and Saint Jorioz. From May 2021, the communes of Doussard and Lathuile will be connected to the Syane fibre optic network. In July 2021, 60,000 homes in 26 communes will be covered. In the second half of 2021, 216,000 homes in Haute-Savoie will benefit from fibre.

Individuals and businesses will be able to take out a very high-speed subscription with the usual operators at the same price conditions. You can consult the offer of access to the public optical fibre network on the Syane website.

In practice, you need to go to your operator’s fibre optic page, enter your postal address to find out if you can be connected and subscribe to the offer. If access to fibre is not yet available, you will be given a timetable.
